OBS Studio Video Recording User Guide

OBS Studio (Open Software) is a tool used for various purposes for video recording and streaming.

Installation Steps

  1. Download OBS Studio:

    • Run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • Complete the installation process.

Initial Setup

  1. Launch OBS Studio:

    • Open OBS Studio from the applications or start menu.
  2. Auto-Configuration Wizard:

    • When the launch OBS for the first time, will be prompted to run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. You can choose to set up for optimal recording or streaming.
    • For recording, select "Optimize just for recording, I will not be streaming."
  3. Set Up Scene:

    • In the main OBS window, find the “Scenes” box at the bottom left.
    • Click the "+" button to create a new scene. Name the scene (e.g., "Video Recording").
  4. Add Sources:

    • In the "Sources" box next to "Scenes," click the "+" button to add a source.
    • Choose from the following options based on your recording needs:
      • Display Capture: Records your entire screen.
      • Window Capture: Records a specific application window.
        • Window: Select the particular window to be recorded from the list.
        • Capture Method: Select "Windows 10 (1903 and up)
      • Video Capture Device: Records from a webcam.
      • Audio Input Capture: Captures audio from your microphone.

Recording Settings

  1. Access Settings:

    • Click on File > Settings and select the Output tab.
  2. Set Output Mode: (optional)

    • Change the Output Mode from "Simple" to "Advanced" for more control.
  3. Configure Recording:

    • Under the Recording tab, set:
      • Recording Path: Choose where your recordings will be saved.
      • Recording Format: Select your desired format (e.g., mp4, mkv).
      • Encoder: Choose an encoder based on the hardware capabilities (e.g., x264, NVENC).
  4. Adjust Video Settings:

    • Go to the Video tab.
    • Set the desired Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution.
    • Choose a Frame Rate (FPS) that suits the recording needs (e.g., 30 or 60 FPS).

Starting a Recording

  1. Start Recording:

    • Once set up the scene and sources, click the Start Recording button on the right side of the main OBS interface.
  2. Stop Recording:

    • When finished, click the Stop Recording button. Video will be saved to the designated path.
