Configuring BMC in ASUS Server

Configuring BMC in ASUS Server

To configure the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) IP address on an ASUS server, initially access the server's BIOS/UEFI settings and then configure the BMC network settings. Here's a step-by-step instructions

Server BMC Configuration preparation without a VGA (Using KVM over IP)

To configure the BMC IP address on an ASUS server without using a VGA monitor, you can use a KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch or KVM over IP. Here's a step-by-step guide to prepare and configure the BMC IP address using KVM over IP:

  • Connect a DHCP enabled network cable to the server's BMC port.
  • Connect your laptop to the same network using a LAN connection.
  • Use advanced IP scanner to find the server's bmc IP address.
  • To access the IPMI over GUI, open Internet Explorer and enter the IP address.
  • The default username and password are admin and admin.
  • To activate the KVM viewer after entering the IPMI interface, go to the Remote Control page and click on the H5Viewer icon. From the KVM, you can see the VGA interface of the       server.
  • Server BMC Configuration Using Laptop KVM Adaptor

The Laptop KVM Server Console Adapter ensures full control of the connected units by providing immediate access to the POST screen and BIOS, as well as the ability to manage full configuration of the attached PC or machine; administrators can connect to a headless server/device without the need for an expensive LCD rackmount console or a bulky monitor, keyboard, and mouse solution.

    Advantage
    1. No power adapter is required - draws power from the server side USB connection, conserving your laptop's battery life and avoiding the problem of locating 110V outlets in the server room or remote places.
    2. The small, ruggedized enclosure (equivalent to the size of a cellphone) is easily kept and carried; with no server-side software required.

Configuring for the tirst time ( with a Monitor connected)

    1. Power on your ASUS server.
    2. Press the Del key during the POST (Power-On Self-Test) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup.

    1. Navigate to the Server MGMT Configuration

    1. The Server Management menu displays the server management status and allows you to change the settings.

    1. BMC Support [Enabled]
Allows you to enable or disable interfaces to communicate with BMC. Configuration options: [Disabled] [Enabled]
    2. From the dropdown menu select BMC network configuration

    1. The sub-items in this configuration allow you to configure the BMC network parameters. Scroll using <Page Up> / <Page Down> keys to see more items
    2. From the next page Configure IPV4 support -DM_LAN1

    1. Configuration options: [Previous State] [Static] [DynamicBmcDhcp]. Allows you to set the LAN channel parameters statically or dynamically (by BIOS or by BMC). [Previous State] option will not modify any BMC network parameters during BIOS phase.

    1. From the Configuration Address source select [static]

    1. Set Station IP address

    1. Next- Set the subnet mask. We recommend that you use the same Subnet Mask you have specified on the operating system network for the used network card.

    1. Set the router (Gateway) IP address.

    1. Save and Exit

    1. Once the server restarts, the next boot will show the configured BMC IP address.
