Configure CAPsMAN on MikroTik Switch

What is CAPsMAN

  1. CAPsMAN allows us to centrally manage multiple Access Points (APs) from a single point.
  2. We can centrally configure wireless settings such as SSID, security settings, channel, transmit power, and other parameters for all managed access points.

Prerequisites 

  1. 1 RouterOS based Switch ( we are demonstrating on CCR2116-12G-4S+)
  2. MikroTik wAP ( Here we are configuring with 1 wAP  RBwAPR-2nD&R11e-LTE) Note: we can use (n) number of wAP. 

Steps for Configuration

Configure the RouterOS Switch

  1. Login to Mikrotik switch using winbox, Provide the credentials and click on connect

  1. Click on "CAPsMAN" mentioned in left pane
  2. New dialog box (CAPsMAN) will appear, on dialog box Click on "Manager" button
  3. Again a new dialog box (CAPs Manager) will open, click on the check box "Enabled" to Enable the CAPs Manager.
  4. Click on "Apply" 

  1. Now Click on "Channels" tab 
  2. Provide the Name of Channel (ex : channel1) and Frequency
  3. Select the desired Control Channel Width
  4. Select the Network Band
  5. Click on "Apply"

  1. Now Click on "Datapaths" tab and add new Datapaths
  2. Provide the Name of Datapath (ex : datapath2)
  3. Select the Bridge
  4. Click on "Apply"

  1. Now Click on "Security Cfg." tab and add new configuration
  2. Provide the Name configuration (ex : ultrasecure)
  3. Select the Authentication Type
  4. Select the Encryption type
  5. Type the Passphrase (Passphrase: Mbuzz@123)
  6. Click on "Apply"

  1. Now Click on "Configurations" and add new configuration
  2. Type the name of new Wireless Configuration
  3. Select the Mode as AP
  4. Type the required SSID ( ex : Mbuzz-CAPsMAN )
  5. Select the Channel we created in Channel Configuration
  6. Select the Datapath we created in Datapath Configuration
  7. Select the Security we created in Security Configuration 
  8. Click on "Apply"

  1. Go to the "Provisioning" tab and add new
  2. In the "Action" select "create dynamic enabled" and Select the Master Configuration 
  3. Select the Name Format "prefix"
  4. Type the required prefix (ex : Mbuzz)
  5. Click on Apply


Configure the wAP

  1. Login to Mikrotik wAP using winbox, Provide the credentials and click on connect
  2. Go to "IP" in left pane > Click on DHCP Client > Click on plus "+" button
  3. Select the "Interface" and click on "Apply"

















  1. Click on "Wireless" 
  2. Click on "CAP" button
  3. Click on "Enabled"
  4. Select the "Interface" ( wlan1)
  5. Select the "Discovery Interface" ( ether1)
  6. Then click on "Apply"

  1. CAPsMAN is ready to use
