How to update BMC firmware using Supermicro Update Manager - UEFI (SUM.UEFI)

How to update BMC firmware using Supermicro Update Manager - UEFI (SUM.UEFI)

Supermicro Update Manager UEFI

The Supermicro Update Manager UEFI version (SUM UEFI) is used to locally manage the system BIOS/BMC and update BIOS/BMC firmware image under EFI shell.

System Requirements

  1. Managed System Hardware - X12/H12 and later platforms except H12 non-RoT systems
  2. Operating System - EFI shell
Note: Supermicro system has Built In EFI Shell

Firmware Resources

  1. Download the Firmware bundle from the Supermicro portal. Example: Firmware Resources | Support (supermicro.com)

  2. Extract the downloaded Zip file.
  3. Extract the BMC file.
  4. Copy over the following files to the USB flash driver which is formatted under FAT32.
    1. .bin file
    2. .efi file

SUM.efi - BMC Firmware Update

  1. Connect the USB flash drive to the server
  2. Boot into the server into system BIOS by pressing Delete key and set the first boot option as Built in EFI shell and save the configuration by pressing F4 key. The system will reset and boot into the EFI shell.
  3. The system will boot into the Command Line Interface provided by the Extensible Firmware Interface.
  4. To know  the information about a list of block device mappings along with their corresponding device paths, run the following command
    map -b
  5. The map -b  list how the system's storage devices are recognized and mapped by the EFI firmware. Our USB flash storage mapped as FS1 by the EFI firmware.
  6. Type FS1: command in the EFI shell to change and access the current working directory to the root directory of the file system labeled as "FS1". Once inside the root directory, type ls this command will display a directory listing, showing you the names of files and subdirectories in the current directory.
  7. To start updating the BMC firmware, type the following command SUM.efi -I Redfish_HI -u ADMIN -p WZPWAYQGMS -c UpdateBmc --file BMC_H13AST2600-ROT-6501MS_20231207_01.00.26_STDsp.bin
SUM.efi - Name of an EFI application
-I Redfish_HI - Updating the BMC firmware using Redfish interface
-u ADMIN - Username for BMC
-p WZPWAYQGMS - Password for BMC
-c UpdateBmc - Command to update Baseboard Management Controller
--file BMC_H13AST2600-ROT-6501MS_20231207_01.00.26_STDsp.bin - Firmware file name
  8. The above command will start uploading and updating the BMC firmware.
  9. Once Firmware update is completed, wait for 3 minutes for the BMC to reboot automatically.
  10. Type the following command SUM.efi -I Redfish_HI -u ADMIN -p WZPWAYQGMS -c GetBmcInfo to get the updated BMC information.
