What is TrueNAS?
TrueNAS is one of the most popular open-source storage Operating Systems and the most effective method for managing and distributing data across a network. TrueNAS Open Storage offers file, block, object, and application data storage in a single location.
TrueNAS Requirements
The first thing you’ll need is a system on which to install TrueNAS
and attach disks for storage. Any standard PC system will work for your NAS, as
there are no special requirements for the software or storage. TrueNAS's main
use case is to store data, so we should have more storage on the PC.
TrueNAS Minimum Requirements
- 64-Bit CPU | 8 GB RAM (16 GB Recommended) |
- 16 GB Boot Drive (SSD Encouraged) |
- At Least One Attached Disk |
- Network Port |
- Hardware RAID Not Recommended
Installation Process
- Download the TrueNAS Core ISO from the TrueNAS website: Write the ISO to a USB stick and boot the server from the removable media to start the installation.

- When it boots up, you should see a boot screen with TrueNAS as an option. Press the Enter key to begin installing TrueNAS

- Once the installation begins, select the first option "Boot TrueNAS Installer'', From the following window choose "Install/upgrade" to continue the installation

- From the following window, select the drive to install the files: Use
the space bar to select the storage and press enter to complete the selection.

- The next part is to assign a root
password for TrueNAS. Enter the password and press Enter to go to the next
settings

- The erasing information will be obtained from the following page. Select "Yes" to proceed with the installation.

- Next is to select the boot mode: To proceed, select UEFI as the
Boot mode and press Enter.

- Once the Boot Mode section is completed, the system will begin to
install TrueNAS.


- The machine will reboot once the truenas installation is complete.

- Following the boot, a console setup window will appear with the GUI information, which is effectively the IP address allocated to that computer by the network.

- Enter the IP address onto any web browser in the network to gain access to the GUI.

We can administer TrueNAS settings like creating storage pools, iSCSI, NFS, and SMB file-sharing protocols through the GUI interface.
