Resolution
of CPU CATERR Error Due to Socket Contamination
Issue:
Servers were reporting a CPU CATERR error during POST or system logs.
Cause:
Upon investigation, the CPU was
reseated, and it was discovered that heatsink compound particles had fallen
into the CPU socket pins, causing poor contact. This led to the CPU
reporting Cache Allocation Technology (CAT) errors.
Resolution
Steps:
Power Down and Disconnect:
Shut down the server completely
and disconnect all power sources.
Remove CPU and Heatsink:
Carefully remove the heatsink
and CPU.
Inspect Socket and CPU Pins:
Check the CPU socket for foreign
particles or contamination.
Inspect CPU pins for any damage
or debris.
Clean CPU Socket:
Use a soft brush to
gently remove particles from the socket.
Optionally, use isopropyl
alcohol (ISO Propyl) for cleaning stubborn residue.
Allow the socket to dry
completely before proceeding.
Reseat CPU and Memory Modules:
Carefully reseat the CPU into
the cleaned socket.
Reseat all memory modules to
ensure proper connection.
Reassemble and Power On:
Reattach the heatsink.
Reconnect power and boot the
server.
Result:
After cleaning the CPU socket and reseating the CPU and memory, the CPU
CATERR error was resolved and the server booted normally.
Preventive
Recommendations:
Avoid applying excessive thermal
compound that could fall onto CPU socket.
Regularly inspect and clean
server components during maintenance.
Handle CPUs and sockets
carefully to prevent bent pins or contamination.
