KB Article: RS700-E11-RS4U – Memory Population Guidelines
Warning: This applies only to the ASUS RS700-E11-RS4U server. Each server model is different, so please refer to the respective server motherboard manual before performing DIMM population
Summary
This knowledge base article explains the
correct memory (DIMM) population rules for the RS700-E11-RS4U server. Following
these guidelines ensures optimal system performance, maximum memory bandwidth,
and system stability.
Applies To
- Server Model: RS700-E11-RS4U
- Manufacturer: ASUS
- Processor Support: AMD EPYC 7004 Series (SP5)
- Memory Type: DDR5 ECC RDIMM / DDR5 3DS RDIMM
Memory Architecture Overview
- 12 memory channels per CPU
- Up to 2 DIMMs per channel (1DPC / 2DPC)
- Maximum 24 DIMMs in dual CPU configuration
- ECC enabled by default
General Memory Population Rules
1. Use identical DIMMs for best
performance.
2. Populate memory symmetrically across CPUs.
3. Always populate slot A before slot B in a channel.
4. Avoid mixing capacities or speeds.
5. Use ASUS QVL validated DIMMs.
Single CPU Memory Population
When only CPU1 is installed, populate
memory slots associated with CPU1 only. Begin with one DIMM per channel before
adding second DIMMs.

Dual CPU Memory Population
When both CPUs are installed, memory must
be populated evenly across both processors. Maintain the same number of DIMMs
per CPU.
1DPC vs 2DPC Configuration
1DPC: Best performance and higher memory
frequency.
2DPC: Higher memory capacity with possible speed reduction.
Supported Memory Types
- DDR5 ECC RDIMM
- DDR5 ECC 3DS RDIMM
- Memory speed depends on CPU, DIMM rank, and population.
Common Issues Due to Incorrect Population
- System fails to POST
- Partial memory detection
- Reduced memory speed
- System instability
Verification Steps
1. Enter BIOS → Advanced → Memory
Configuration
2. Verify detected memory and speed
3. Confirm DIMM placement matches motherboard labeling
