KB 148090 - Install an OS remotely via ASUS IPMI's KVM

Here's how to install an OS remotely via ASUS IPMI's KVM (Java or HTML5-based remote console):

1. Access the BMC web interface.

  • Connect to the ASUS IPMI/ASMB management LAN port (separate from the server's normal NICs).
  • Browse to https://<bmc-ip-address> (the default is often printed on a sticker on the board/chassis, or check the DHCP lease on the management port).
  • Log in - ASUS defaults are commonly admin / admin (check your specific board's manual, as some ship with a unique password on a label).

2. Launch the KVM console.

  • In the web UI, find Remote Control → Console Redirection (sometimes labeled KVM, Java SOL/KVM, or HTML5 KVM).
  • Launch it- HTML5 KVM works in-browser; Java KVM downloads a .jnlp file (needs Java Runtime installed locally).

3. Mount your install media.

  • In the KVM window, go to Virtual Media (or the Media menu).
  • Choose Virtual Storage / Image Redirection.
  • Select ISO File as the device type, browse to your OS installer .iso on your local machine, and click Plug In / Connect.

4. Set boot order / boot device

  • Either reboot and hit the key for the boot menu (F11/F8, varies by board) and pick the virtual CD/DVD, or
  • Go into BIOS/UEFI setup via KVM (Del/F2 during POST) and set the virtual optical drive as the first boot device, then save & exit.

5. Power cycle and install

  • Use the KVM's power controls (Power Reset / Power Cycle / Power On) rather than a physical button.
  • Watch POST through the KVM viewer, confirm it boots from the mounted ISO, then walk through the OS installer as normal via keyboard/mouse redirection.

6. After installation

  • Once the install completes and you're prompted to reboot, unplug the virtual media (uncheck/disconnect it in the Virtual Media menu) so it doesn't loop back into the installer.
  • Reboot normally.
